An elementary education teacher, to me, is the best career opportunity that one could choose. I perceive that by being a teacher, one can have a positive influence on the lives of many children. I want to be a positive black female role model in todays society. I think that through teaching, I can relate my experiences to how I teach my children. I have dealt with many racial and gender issues in the past. I think the experiences that I have encountered will only make me a better teacher.

I want to be teacher that puts the needs of their students first. I sense that the challenge for todays teacher should be to make sure that every child learns. From seminars that I have attended, I have found that every child can learn but at different rates. I presume that true successful teachers will know the capabilities of all their students. A teacher should know exactly what rate each student can learn. This is important if a teacher truly wants to be the best teacher that he or she can be.

I also want to be a teacher that can establish a friendship with her students. I want children to see me as an understanding, caring, and friendly person. I want them to feel comfortable asking me questions. Students have to understand that a teacher is there for them. They need to see teachers not as bad people or dominant people in the learning environment but as someone who is concerned about their education.

I also believe that it is important for a teacher to motivate his or her students. A teacher can motivate students by praising them verbally or by displaying their work. Students should be recognized for their talents whether its neat writing, drawing, doing math problems, etc. . . . they deserve praise. Praising children lets them know that they are doing a good job. If they are told that they are doing a good job then they will continue down the road of successfulness. Going down this road can lead to famous writers, artists, musicians, doctors, surgeons, and many more occupations. Teachers find the next world leaders in their classrooms. These students, as well as all students need encouragement. Teachers need to praise good work but also be eager to help students improve in problem areas.

Lastly, I think that it is very important for teachers to be creative. Teachers need to thoroughly plan out their lessons. The way that a teacher introduces a new subject is crucial to how the students will react and how much attention they will pay. I want to be a teacher that has a very creative, yet unique teaching style. I want to grasp my students attention as soon as I stand up to start another lesson. I want my students to know that learning is not boring, but something that is very interesting and at times, even fun.

Becoming a teacher is very important to me. It is something that has grown into me since I was a young child playing school with paper and pencils. I feel that today some children do not get the attention that they need at home from their parents. I know that it is very important for teachers to be able to take on any challenges that face them in todays school system. Teachers need to be able to communicate well with their students and parents as well as to provide all information needed to produce an individual ready for todays society.
